Itinerary

Tourism in Iceland has grown exponentially in recent years. However, the interior of the island preserves places barely explored and roads little traveled. On this route we will combine visits to very famous and tourist places with locations that are more unreachable for most visitors to the island.

This exploration will take us to Landmannalaugar, Askja, the southern waterfalls, the areas of fumaroles, volcanoes, glaciers and a wide etcetera.

It is an active route with walks of between 2 and 4 hours through nature. A trip suitable for all those accustomed to walking frequently through mountainous terrain.

Pick up at the airport and transfer to the accommodation.

Hotel accommodation in Reykjavik

After breakfast, the guide will meet the group at the reception of the accommodation, where a small trip presentation. We begin our journey, in a exclusive vehicle for our group, to the south of the island.

We begin our visits with the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, famous for allowing travelers to pass behind the water column. Next, a waterfall that will surprise you, Gljúfrabúi or “the hidden waterfall”, which many travelers do not visit because it does not appear in all travel guides. In this area we can see the effects of the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which caused aerial chaos in Europe in 2010.

We will continue our route south towards Skógar to visit the Skógafoss waterfall, which at 60 meters high and 25 meters wide is one of the largest in Iceland. Here we will do a little trekking up the river and we will observe a multitude of small waterfalls that are found in the same canyon.

Dyrhólaey will be our next stop, a high point from which to observe the colonies of puffins that nest during the summer in this area (from mid-June to mid-August) and curious lava formations. We will visit Reynisfjara, a black sand beach surrounded by a landscape with impressive basalt formations and from where we will be able to observe the famous “Trolls” that legend says were petrified at dawn and are in the sea. A beautiful day, right? This is only just beginning. We headed to our accommodation.

Accommodation in the Vík area

Navigation between icebergs and Jökulsárlón We will head towards the Vatnajökull glacier, the third largest mass of ice on the planet after Antarctica and Greenland. We will go to the area of the glacial lagoons, where Jökulsárlón stands out, with a size of 18 km2 and hundreds of icebergs that break off from the Breiðamerkurjökull tongue. At its mouth the icebergs remain stranded on a black sand beach. We will also visit Fjallsárlón, another lagoon with icebergs that has an impressive glacier front where you can take very good pictures. In this lagoon we will make a zodiac navigation between icebergs. While we tour the lagoon they will explain the reason for the melting, the reality of climate change and more interesting details about glaciers and icebergs.

Accommodation in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

Iceland’s famous F-roads are those only accessible to 4×4 and modified vehicles. The F208 will be the track we will use to access Landmannalaugar, crossing several rivers until we reach the refuge.

Once there, we will go trekking to enjoy the unique landscape of this area, where long ago lava flows left large areas full of basalt, obsidian and rhyolite.

This is, without a doubt, the “temple” of trekking in Iceland, where adventurers from all over the world travel in search of unparalleled landscapes.

Before returning to our accommodation, we will take advantage of and bathe in the fabulous hot springs, and we will discuss the following stages, which will take us along the Sprengisandur track to tour Iceland from south to north.

The Bárðarbunga volcano had the last eruption in Iceland in 2014. We are going to go to that area and we will sleep in the Nýidalur refuge, a unique, special place and in one of the most beautiful locations in Iceland. Surrounded by rivers, lava flows, glaciers, we are in the interior of Iceland. Accommodations in the Sprengisandur area.

We head north to reach the famous Caldera de Askja and the Viti crater, famous for its beautiful turquoise blue waters.

The fabulous desert of Möðrudalur and its slopes, we

They will allow us to get closer to Kverkfjöll, a very wild area of the country to the north of the Vatnajökull glacier.

We will get closer to see its glacial tongues and we will trek through the areas of the last and most recent volcanic eruptions that have occurred in Iceland. It is not always easy in Iceland to feel in isolated places, away from the masses, in an incomparable landscape, surrounded by the most impressive nature and feeling special for being there. This feeling will come in these stages for various reasons, but above all, for the sake of being there!

Accommodations in the Kverkfjöl area.

We have to leave the interior for supplies and to make a few visits. We take the route towards highway 1 to go to Húsavík, the famous town in the north of Iceland, known as the capital of whales. From here we will depart to visit Dettifoss, located in the

Jökulsárgljúfur National Park and considered the mightiest waterfall in all of Europe. Many of you may recognize it because it was used as the opening scene of the Ridley Scott movie Prometheus, which has many locations in Iceland. In the Lake Mývatn area we will observe the large number of existing pseudocraters and we will be able to learn some notions about the geological formation of the area and the particularities of each of the natural phenomena that we will encounter, which is also a paradisiacal habitat for waterfowl . We will do a whale watching in the north of Iceland where the success rate of sightings is close to 100%.

Accommodation in the Húsavik area

Before continuing to the Highlands, we will stop at Akureyri, the “Capital of the North”.

We resume our route towards the interior of the island, to take the other road that crosses the country through the interior, called Kjölur. We will arrive at Hveravellir, an inland paradise, famous for its hot springs. Trekking day in the area. We continue our route through Kjölur to visit Kerlingarfjöll, an area of volcanoes, mountains and hot springs.

Accommodations in the Kerlingarfjöll (Kjölur) area.

Our next destination is the so-called “Golden Circle”, undoubtedly the most popular group of visits on the island.

Here we will know three essential places on a trip to Iceland:

Geysir, the famous water spout that has given its name to all the geysers in the world, is currently dormant. But next to him we will see his “brother” Strokkur, who emanates with all his strength every few minutes and that we will be able to enjoy several times during our visit:

Gullfoss or the “Golden Waterfall”, one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland thanks to its fabulous waterfalls that reach 32 meters high; and to finish,

Thingvellir National Park (þingvellir), seat of the first Icelandic Parliament, where we can observe the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. We continue our trip to Reykjavík where we will put the finishing touch to this spectacular trip toasting at the recently opened Sky Lagoon Spa, with unbeatable views of the fjord.

After settling in our accommodation, we will have the afternoon and evening free to enjoy the capital. Reykjavík is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe and the Icelandic nightlife is famous for having many places where you can have a drink in a very pleasant atmosphere.

Accommodation in Reykjavik.

Free time until the transfer to the airport. Depending on your flight schedule, we recommend visiting the port, the Laugavegur shopping street, the famous Hallgrímskirkja church, the Harpa building, or one of the capital’s museums.

Optional: Blue Lagoon one way from Reykjavík and return to the airport).

Return flight

Note: the itinerary can be done in one direction or the other without distinction. For logistics reasons in the country, some location or accommodation may change without prior notice. This does not usually happen, but Iceland is one of the world destinations with the greatest increase in travelers in recent years and on certain occasions we have had to make small changes on the fly for external reasons. This does not affect the visits to be made.
